Back That Serve' Up

Spring is officially in full swing, but we’re looking towards the Summertime. This week we’re taking a look at Scheduled Backups, one of the features you can look forward to with the Summer 2015 version of Ascend RMS. Read on to learn how to keep yourself stress-free during a server failure.

No-Hassle Backups: With Scheduled Backup enabled, server PCs can be automatically backed up to any folder, any time. While we also recommend keeping an off-site backup in case of theft or fire, Scheduled Backups allow you to set it and forget it.

But what if your backup fails? Well, you’ll receive a failure notification and an email will be sent to the Ascend Support Team for further investigation.  No input needed.

Having a backup gives you peace of mind and ensures your business can keep running in the event your server is ever damaged or becomes corrupted. It can happen to anyone and because of countless reasons: an electric surge, an old workstation, or a spilled beer.

Whatever the reason, it’s better to be safe than sorry. The problem is that it’s not always easy to remember to do it. So, make sure to take a few minutes to configure your options once the feature is released on June 9th.     Are you going to implement transaction logging so you can recover up to the point of failure, rather than losing all changes since the last backup if you have a DB failure.???

      Doug, I’m not sure if transaction logging is in the works, but if you haven’t already I would suggesting throwing the idea into the UserVoice forum.

      Our team is constantly looking for new ideas and if it gains traction on UserVoice, there’s a good chance you’ll see it implemented on a later version of Ascend.

  2. A couple questions about the new backup function-

    #1: Will it compress the files? A simple zip compression reduces Ascend backup file sizes by over 60%, making it much faster to transfer them (to a flash drive or across the ‘net). Obviously saves on storage space too!

    #2: Any problem saving them to a location on the ‘net? Specifically, Microsoft OneDrive? If you sign up for the subscription version of Office 365, at about $8/month, you get 1 terabyte of storage space. Nice place to stash those backups! Always there if you need ’em, wherever you go.

      File compression is definitely something we are looking to implement. Nightly backups can add up quickly, especially if you have a larger database.

      As for storing backups on a cloud drive, there’s absolutely no issue with that. As long as there’s a local network location you can map to and you understand any potential risks associated with storing files on third-party servers, using something like Dropbox or OneDrive would be an easy solution to automating the storage of off-site backups.
