Meet Maggie, Ascend Bookkeeper

July 18, 2016 Meet the Team Sarah

Every few weeks, we feature one of our team members to give you a chance to get to know the people that develop Ascend, balance your books, and support you every day.

This week our subject is Maggie Ellison, Bookkeeper. So, let’s get started…

What is your title at Ascend? What does that mean?

I’m an Ascend Bookkeeper. Retailers hire us to do their bookkeeping. Although we’re not “in-house” at the shop, we’re able to be there virtually.

How long have you been at Ascend? How long in your current role?

I’ve been with Ascend since July 2014. I was hired as an Ascend bookkeeper, and it’s been my only role.

What is most rewarding about your job?

I love working with the retailers. I’ve formed close working relationships with the retailers with whom I work. They make my job interesting and I feel passion for their small business, which is rewarding.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy running, and as of the past two years since starting at Trek, I have started cycling. I also enjoy climbing in the car with my husband, kids, and sometimes the dog and heading across the country to see what adventures we can find. Oh, and I’ve also learned to snowboard in the past two years – and although it did result in injury this year, I plan to stick with it!

What makes you GREAT?

I was hired as the first Ascend bookkeeper (which has become somewhat of a joke title in the department). I’ve watched the bookkeeping department grow, and have been part of the process for it to become what it is now.

I also have an ability to talk to anyone. This, of course, can be great – and at times, maybe not! However, I believe that in my career it helps me form relationships with the people I work for and with. Dealing with people’s finances is very personal for them. It’s a great skill to be able to talk to them and make them feel comfortable and confident.

What bike accessory would you be and why?

A bell. It’s not necessarily in my nature to always start out from the bright side. If I were a bell, how could I not? I mean, making a happy sound would be….Well, happy!

How do you keep a healthy work/life balance?

This has not come easy to me. I’ve started to try my best to be where I am. If I’m at work, I’m at work; if I’m at home, I’m at home. I enjoy and balance them, without trying to do them together. Ascend has a light environment that helps keep me relaxed, even if I’m very busy. And it helps to head out for a bike ride for a break. I have two kids and a husband, and I have learned to enjoy my time with them, my friends, running, biking, everything – and not take things too seriously. Again, this is a work in progress!

What is your spirit animal and why?

A lion. Sometimes, I don’t always do the best to stay in my power. As a lion, I’m always in my power – personally, and professionally.

What would be your superpower? Why did you choose it?

Flying (I know, a typical one). Being in one place has always been difficult for me. I spent many years moving, both throughout my childhood and early adult life. Settling in and being in one place has always felt hard. If I could fly, I could travel at will, yet be home and where I am – the best of both worlds!

What was your favorite toy or activity as a child and why?

My bike! Once I had a bike and was able to go out into the world at will, I had a sense of freedom to “just be” that I hadn’t experienced before. I was very shy and afraid of the world, and it allowed me to be free of my fears.
